Nous sommes bouleversés par le départ de Vinod, notre camarade, notre ami et notre frère de luttes et d’affection. Vinod a été une des personnes fondatrices du CI ; une des personnes marquantes du mouvement altermondialiste. Il était soucieux d’en faire un espace de discussion et d’élaboration et était un remarquable facilitateur des débats. De plus, il n’hésitait jamais à s’investir dans les tâches concrètes.
Il était très attaché au processus des forums sociaux sans pour autant l’idéaliser et sans refuser les critiques qui devaient lui être faites. Il pensait que ce processus était le plus avancé de ce qu’il était possible de faire dans la situation actuelle. Il pensait nécessaire de le faire évoluer pour le renforcer.
Pour expliciter l’attachement de Vinod au processus des FSM, je citerai son intervention à la réunion du CI de Rabat en 2009. Vinod rappelle qu’en 1984, à Hiroshima, des mouvements asiatiques et des intellectuels proposent de lancer une alliance globale des peuples (Global alliance of people). Ils se posent la question de savoir qui va construire cette alliance. Vinod raconte en ces termes la réponse qui se précise dans ces débats : « Ce sont les mouvements qui construiront l’alliance des peuples. Ce ne sont pas les partis, ni les associations, ni les ONG. Ce sont les mouvements sociaux et citoyens » Cette proposition caractérisera les futurs forums sociaux mondiaux.
Son écoute, sa disponibilité et son humanité prenaient encore plus de sens quand on connaissait ses engagements. On savait le rôle qu’il avait joué, notamment, dans Jubilée Sud, dans les mobilisations de Bhopal, dans l’organisation du FSM de Mumbai, dans le réseau Alter-inter et dans la fondation du magnifique People’s Science Movement en Inde.
Vinod nous a tant donné avec sa simplicité, sa disponibilité et sa profondeur. Nous le gardons dans nos cœurs.
Nous voulons dire tout notre amour à Anita, et toute notre affection à sa famille et tous ses amis.
We are overwhelmed by the departure of Vinod, our comrade, our friend and our brother in struggles and affection. Vinod was a leading figure of the alterglobalist movement, one of those founding the International Council. He believed that the IC must be a space for discussion and elaboration and he was a remarkable facilitator of the debates. Moreover, he never hesitated to get involved in practical tasks.
He was very engaged in the social forum process without idealizing it. He never rejected the critics that had to be done. He thought that this process was the more advanced that could be possible in the present situation. And that it has to evolve.
To explain his attachment to WSF process, I would remind his intervention at the IC meeting in Rabat in 2009. Vinod recalls that in 1984, in Hiroshima, Asian movements and intellectuals propose to launch a Global Alliance of People. They raise the question of who will build this alliance. Vinod explained the result of the discussions in these terms « The movements will build the alliance of peoples. It is not the parties, the associations or the NGOs. It is the social and citizen movements » This proposal will characterize the WSF process.
Listening, availability and humanity that characterized Vinod took more sense when you know its commitments. We knew the role he had, especially in Jubilee South, in the mobilization of Bhopal, in organizing the WSF in Mumbai, in Alter-inter network and in the foundation of the remarkable People‘s Science Movement in India.
Vinod has given us so much with its simplicity, attention and depth. We keep him in our hearts.

C’est dans le CI et Alterinter que nous nous sommes vraiment connus
Et là notre amitié a été évidente
Et s’est renforcée
Nous prenions un énorme plaisir à échanger, à discuter
Une fidélité à notre culture marxiste et à ses traditions révolutionnaires
Et cette fidélité passait par le refus du dogmatisme et du sectarisme
